Showing our love for Africa

Thursday, 09 February 2017

I don’t remember exactly when or where I first saw them … I just know that ever since, those fabrics hypnotized me.

There are different types, origins and qualities of African fabrics but all share the liveliness and exaltation of colors which are arranged in fun and bold mosaics. It is as if they reflect the liveliness and the provocative personalities of the people who wear them.

During my time in Africa, I have witnessed the role that these fabrics occupy in the lives of many people. In rural areas in Mozambique, for example, they use a fabric called Capulana. Most women wear several layers of fabric wrapped around their waists. The Capulana is then used as a skirt, coat, tablecloth, a bag to carry the kids or store things, or as an umbrella when it rains.

In WEWE we use fabrics from different countries of West Africa which traditionally have been used to make dresses. We design, cut and sew our clothes in Cape Town and the fabrics are imported by traders traveling from South Africa to Senegal, Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali and Cote d´ Ivoire. We are firmly committed to support Western African economies by importing our fabrics from there despite it´s more difficult and expensive to get them.

Cotton fabrics are subjected to a dyeing complex process. They consist of several layers of paint to achieve the different prints and a special color fixing process with wax which gives them their distinctive looks. These colors maintain their quality for a long time, while the waxed textures also become smoother through wearing and washing.

Our garments are NOT factory-produced – they are carefully handcrafted by our sewers who usually work from home. We empower local women´s work and our intention is to create jobs and bring back to the textil industry the role that it once played in the past in South Africa.

Making any WEWE garment is a very manual process – it requires to carefully study the right alignment between cutting lines and garment patterns design on any single new print being used. Each fabric is an unique and limited product and it is difficult to reproduce the same garment twice. That makes every WEWE product a unique piece. So if you see something you like, you better buy it now!! :)

WEWE is not only a fashion brand.

It is the purpose of bringing a part of African culture to our European lifestyles and putting some African joy and color to our lives. It´s a cultural exchange that wants to tell people a story of another place .It´s the fusion of people coming from different countries, races, colors and religions united by the same passion to create something different.

WEWE isn´t not just a garment with ethnic style. Behind each WEWE there is a world we want to share with you.

I truly hope that each piece will transmit you that inspiration, since this is my way of showing my love, admiration and respect for this continent.
