Social Media Advice: Twitter

Thursday, 17 January 2013

Seller Development Exec Samantha Bennett gives you the lowdown on how to use Twitter to grow your customer base and maximise your sales.

Twitter is a really quick and easy way to build your customer base and keep in contact with them. It’s perfect for keeping your customers updated about the goings on in your Marketplace Boutique, your brand in general and it’s also a great place to get your brand personality out there.

Once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s time to start growing your followers and, in turn, your brand awareness. Here are our Do’s and Don’ts for making Twitter work for your ASOS Marketplace boutique.

Dos:

DO: Talk about your ASOS Marketplace account. Use your Twitter account to promote your business, it’s a great tool.
DO: Talk about upcoming collections. Create some excitement with teaser images or ideas.
DO: Post ‘behind the scenes’ pictures of your items/models/locations/out-takes.
DO: Talk to your customer. Respond to tweets and get chatting, customers love a brand that talks back.
DO: Talk about things other than your business. Customers like to build an affinity with a brand by getting to know the people behind it and Twitter is the perfect vehicle for this.
DO: Share exciting links or places to go with your followers.
DO: Use Twitter to promote competitions and discounts.
DO: Stay professional. This doesn’t mean boring; it just means remember you’re a brand. And be nice to your customers please.
DO: Include a link to your boutique in your Twitter bio.
DO: Include a link to your boutique or items within relevant tweets. Uploading a picture of a live product is great, but without a link no one will click through to your boutique.
DO: Leave a space between a link and any other text. If there isn’t a space it cancels out the link and you can’t click through and we’re all too lazy to copy and paste it!
DO: Hashtag. It helps people who may not be following you find you. Keep them relevant to your tweet and brand identity.
DO: Spell check and sense check. If it doesn’t read clearly, it will be overlooked.
DO: Use it to interact with and support other ASOS Marketplace sellers. Marketplace Kru say whut?
DO: Interact with @ASOSMarketplace. We love to hear from you and see what you’re up to.

Don’ts:

DON’T: Talk solely about your ASOS Marketplace account. People won’t follow you if you have nothing to say.
DON’T: Post links without any other text. Explain what the link is, people won’t click if they don’t know what they are linking to.
DON’T: Tweet about every item you upload. Be selective; pick your favourite and direct people to your boutique to see the rest.
DON’T: Tweet the same thing 20 times over. If you’re running a competition and want to promote it that’s fine! But find new ways to say it and leave enough time between tweets.
DON’T: Spam. By all means tweet people about your boutique and collections! But tweeting 20 people in a row isn’t the way to do it.
DON’T: Get too personal. If you want to talk about your boyfriend’s inability to commit get a personal account too.
DON’T: Bitch. It’s not the place. Take it to your personal facebook and go nuts.
DON’T: Retweet every comment you ever get. The odd nice one is fine, but retweeting 10 comments about how amazing you are gets pretty boring to a follower.

These are not commandments and they aren’t the only way to use Twitter. If you are already doing it successfully then pfft to me! But, I hope they help some of you get to grips with this platform as it really can be a wonderful tool in growing your brand.
